The Art of Showing Off was targeted for
jugglers and non-jugglers alike, and The Gravity Playground
stays true to this them.
It features jugglers, dancers, physical
performers and manipulators strutting their stuff, but it also
includes several scenes of children imitating and playing
along with the same props that the pros use in their scenes.
Watch Lana Bolin run through part of her ring routine, and
then watch Barry’s son tie a string to a ring and spin it
around in the air. Who’s having more fun? It’s too close to
call.
Watch the whole Rhys Thomas clan play with
clubs and balls—call it "play" rather than "juggle." The list
of performers in this video reads like a Who’s Who of West
Coast Talent: Tim Kelly, Stanford Juggling Research Institute,
Kevin Axtel, Prisna, Jean Paul Valjean, Mike Mesa and Curt
Carlyle of Vanillatown, Keith Everslage and Charlie Brown. Out
of towners include Connie Leaverton, Clown Loto and Olga
Galchenko doing absolutely no juggling (her scene is an
absolute classic—I will not tell you what it is).
I don’t have children, but if I had
children, this is one of the videos I would want them to watch
and try to emulate. Barry’s Learn to juggle segment in the
Extras portion of the DVD uses scarves and is perfectly suited
for the young beginner.
I encourage viewers to watch the DVD with
the commentary by Dan and Barry turned on. On the whole, I
found their comments and riffs funny and interesting. More
hardcore jugglers and performers will want the DVD simply for
the seven-minute Raspyni Brothers promo film. These guys have
been there, done that, and they have got the promo video to
prove it. All I can say is…wow.
But I digress….if you are looking for an
entertaining juggling video for children of various ages, The
Gravity Playground delivers the goods.
